    What Is Micarta?

Micarta is a composite made of several layers of fabric – often linen, paper or glass fibre – pressed together with synthetic resin under high pressure. The result is an extremely stable, moisture-resistant material with a pleasant, slightly grippy feel that does not swell or crack even when wet.

    What Is G10?

G10 works on a similar principle but is based on glass-fibre fabric instead of natural fibres. That makes G10 even more resistant to moisture and chemicals and one of the toughest handle materials there is – one reason it is often used on outdoor and work knives.

Micarta/G10 vs. Wood: the Key Differences

Wooden handles score on natural looks, individual grain and a warm feel, but they need regular oiling so they do not dry out or crack. Micarta and G10 are virtually maintenance-free: no oiling needed and unfazed by washing-up water and everyday kitchen use – but visually more uniform and less individual than natural wood grain.

    Which Material Suits Whom?

If you value looks, tradition and natural materials and do not mind occasional care, wood is a good choice. If you want a low-maintenance, extremely tough knife for hard everyday use, Micarta or G10 is the better fit.

Frequently Asked Questions About Micarta and G10

    Is Micarta waterproof?

Yes, Micarta absorbs virtually no water, which makes it far easier to look after than untreated wood.

Which is tougher: Micarta or G10?

Thanks to its glass-fibre base, G10 is considered even more resistant to moisture and mechanical stress than Micarta.

Do I need to oil Micarta or G10 handles?

No, neither material needs oiling and both can simply be cleaned with water.

Do Micarta and G10 look like wood?

No, both look more uniform and technical than wood – if you value the natural grain of wood, a classic wooden handle is usually preferable.
